har ki pauri haridwar uttarakhand

  • Well, it is pronounced as both Haridwar & Hardwar. Haridwar means the door of Hari (Lord Vishnu) & Hardwar means the door Of Shiva, as the gateway to the Four Shrines/Dham of Uttrakhand.
  • This is the place where India’s national river or you can say Hindus Holy river Ganga flows.
  • The Kumbh Mela is also celebrated here which happens once every 12 years. It is the largest spiritual gathering in the world where millions of devotees take a holy dip in the sacred water. It is believed that the river turns itself into sanctity spots filled with primordial amrita at the historic moment of the Maha Kumbh Mela. The story behind this Kumbh Mela was “During Samudra Manthan, a pot (nectar of immortality or Amrit) appears and both Devas and Asuras(demons)want to grab it. After that Devas ran to save the nectar from Asuras and trying to hide it. This fight takes 12 days( which is equal to 12 years as for humans) and during this fight, the drop of nectar fell into four different places on earth (Haridwar, Ujjain, Nasik, and Allahabad). That’s why this Kumbh Mela celebrates every 12 years in these places.
  • Daksh Mahadev Temple- The mythological story about is this place is that King Daksha Prajapati, father of Lord Shiva’s wife Sati performed yagna at this place, but he did not invite Shiva. Sati, in anger, burnt herself in the yagna kund. This provoked Mahadev to destroy Daksha Yagna & behead the king, but when the gods praised him back to life. Daksha Mahadev temple is thus a tribute to this legend.
  • Haridwar always reminds as major shakti peeth for the devotees because it is believed that the heart and navel of goddess Sati fell in the region where the Maya Devi temple stands today and thus it is sometimes referred to as a Shakti Peetha.
  • Chandi Devi Temple is the place where the army chief Chanda-Munda of a local demon King Shumbh-Nishumbha was killed by Goddess Chandi here after which the place got the name, Chandi Devi.
  • Har-Ki-Pauri which means the footstep of God Legend says that this is the place where the Lord Vishnu Left his footprint. It is believed the bathing in the Har ki Pauri washes all you away from sins.
